Teeth grinding, more formally known as bruxism, is a condition affecting many children. Some kids grind their teeth out of stress; others do teeth grindingit almost unknowingly. Persistent teeth grinding can cause a variety of oral problems, including chipped teeth, sensitivity to hot and cold items, gum injury and pain or discomfort in the mouth or face. At Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Jaclyn Bae is your Yorba Linda pediatric dentist for treating bruxism in children.

What is Bruxism

Bruxism is the grinding of the teeth and commonly occurs in children, particularly at night while sleeping. Many kids outgrow bruxism with age. If excessive grinding is causing the teeth to become misaligned, your Yorba Linda pediatric dentist may recommend a night guard, which can help to protect the teeth against the wear and tear of excessive grinding.

If you ever peek in on your sleeping child, you might hear them grinding their teeth at night. Beyond hearing them grind their teeth, there are other indications they might be doing so. Signs your child might be grinding their teeth include:

  • Teeth that look worn down
  • Complaints of jaw pain
  • Frequent headaches
  • Persistent clenching of the jaw muscles
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages when eating and drinking

If you have observed your child grinding their teeth regularly, whether during the day or while sleeping at night, see your Yorba Linda pediatric dentist. There are treatments that can minimize the effects of persistent teeth grinding. Even if you are unsure whether your child is grinding their teeth, the dentist can look for signs and determine if bruxism is a problem.
