It’s common for children to experience cavities, but there are ways to help prevent them. Along with teaching your kids proper oral hygiene habits, it may be beneficial to consider discussing dental sealants with your child’s dentist. Dr. Jaclyn Bae at Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry in Yorba Linda, CA, is here to answer any questions you may have about dental sealants and explain how they can help your child’s smile.
How Sealants Can Protect Your Child’s Teeth
Sealants are designed to fill in the crevasses of the teeth. This protects the teeth from getting food particles stuck in them, which otherwise could cause cavities. The application is fast and painless and can protect your child’s teeth for years. Sealants are best for the first molars, which pop up around age six, and then the second molars which occur around age twelve.
Sealants act as a barrier to block off food from getting stuck to the teeth and feeding the bacteria that cause cavities. The sooner a sealant is applied to a tooth, the more effective it will be. Children benefit the most from sealants because their teeth are newer and are less likely to have any damage happen to their teeth at a young age. More than 65 percent of cavities happen in the grooves of teeth and spaces between teeth and can likely be prevented by the application of sealants.
With proper care and regular checkups from your child’s dentist in Yorba Linda, CA, sealants can last a few years. It’s important to make sure that your child has a proper oral hygiene routine, consisting of daily brushing and flossing, and that you’re bringing them for regular checkups as recommended by their dentist.

One look at the chewing surfaces of those back molars, with all their grooves and ridges, and it’s easy to see how a cavity could form there. While children may do their best to keep their teeth clean, it isn’t often easy to remove all bacteria trapped on the chewing surfaces of their back teeth. Luckily, our Yorba Linda, CA, pediatric dentist Dr. Jaclyn Bae offers a simple solution to protect molars from cavities.
What are dental sealants?
Sealants area protective coating which reduces your child’s risk for developing decay.
Sealants are typically applied once your child’s first set of molars erupts (this is usually around the age of 6 or 7). When your child comes in for their six-month checkups, our Yorba Linda, CA, children’s dentist will monitor the development of their teeth to determine the right time to apply sealants. Sealants can also be applied to your child’s second set of molars, which usually erupt around the age of 11 or 12.
How is a dental sealant applied?
Applying a sealant is quick and painless. In most cases, you won’t need to schedule a separate appointment with us to place your child’s sealants; we can often just place it during their routine dental cleaning.
After their teeth have been cleaned we will apply a special solution over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This solution will roughen the surface so that the plastic sealant will stick to each tooth. The solution is then rinsed off and the tooth is dried.
Then our dentist will paint the sealant over the chewing surfaces and allow the sealant time to dry. Sealants are either clear or slightly tooth-colored so they blend in with your child’s smile. No one will be able to see your child’s sealants when they talk or smile.
How long do sealants last?
With proper care, sealants can last a few years. During your child’s six-month checkups we will continue to check the health of the sealant. Sealants that are broken or chipped can easily be reapplied.

"Does my child need sealants?" This is a common question we hear from parents at Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry in Yorba Linda, CA. This prophylactic, or preventative, treatment is a great way to help protect your children's teeth from decay, saving you time and money and saving your child discomfort. What are dental sealants?
Sealants are a protective coating that is applied to teeth to prevent decay. Typically they are placed on the chewing surface of the molars, which have pits and grooves that are difficult to keep clean even with regular brushing. The sealants harden against the teeth after application and protect these grooves from collecting food particles and bacteria that can potentially lead to cavities.
Why do kids need sealants?
Children are understandably less vigilant about brushing, and molars, with their uneven, pitted surfaces, can be difficult to clean. Some kids are more genetically prone to decay, making the need for sealants from your Yorba Linda children's dentist even more important.
Do sealants really work?
The American Dental Association has determined through years of research that sealants provide 80% more protection from cavities than just brushing alone. After four years, they've shown to continue to provide cavity protection by up to 60%.
How long do sealants last?
They typically last a few years depending on how heavily the teeth are being used. Dr. Jaclyn Bae will check on the sealants placed and will recommend if sealants need to be retouched. It is likely that over the years that sealants may need to be reapplied or redone as they do wear away with time.
