Find more about the benefits of fluoride treatment on the health of your teeth.
Fluoride is a mineral found in nature that just happens to offer a host of advantages for your smile. It might sound odd, but the fluoride found in your drinking water could be providing you and your child with amazing health benefits. Our Yorba Linda, CA, pediatric dentist Dr. Jaclyn Bae is here to tell you why fluoride is so important and whether fluoride treatment is the right option for your child.
Why is fluoride important for your teeth?
Your teeth are made up of enamel, which is very strong but not impervious to damage. One of the best ways to protect tooth enamel from decay is by making sure you get enough fluoride every day.
Tooth decay happens when the sugar or starch your child consumes is turned into acid by oral bacteria. In order to prevent this acid from wearing away at the enamel of their teeth, fluoride helps to remineralize and strengthen tooth enamel once more to prevent cavities.
How can my child get fluoride?
In most cases, the water your child drinks should contain enough fluoride to keep teeth strong and healthy; however, there are some places in which the water doesn’t contain any fluoride. If this is the case in your town it’s particularly important that you turn to our Yorba Linda, CA, children’s dentist to make sure that your child is getting the proper amount of fluoride in their diet.
You can also look for ADA-approved fluoridated toothpaste, which can help prevent cavities from happening to your little one’s smile. Children can start using fluoridated toothpaste once their first tooth erupts (usually around one year old). It’s important that you only dab on a very small amount of toothpaste on the teeth until your child can spit out consistently after brushing after which you can then upgrade to placing a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to their toothbrush to clean their teeth.
