One look at the chewing surfaces of those back molars, with all their grooves and ridges, and it’s easy to see how a cavity could form there. While children may do their best to keep their teeth clean, it isn’t often easy to remove all bacteria trapped on the chewing surfaces of their back teeth. Luckily, our Yorba Linda, CA, pediatric dentist Dr. Jaclyn Bae offers a simple solution to protect molars from cavities.

What are dental sealants?

Sealants area protective coating which reduces your child’s risk for developing decay.

Sealants are typically applied once your child’s first set of molars erupts (this is usually around the age of 6 or 7). When your child comes in for their six-month checkups, our Yorba Linda, CA, children’s dentist will monitor the development of their teeth to determine the right time to apply sealants. Sealants can also be applied to your child’s second set of molars, which usually erupt around the age of 11 or 12.

How is a dental sealant applied?

Applying a sealant is quick and painless. In most cases, you won’t need to schedule a separate appointment with us to place your child’s sealants; we can often just place it during their routine dental cleaning.

After their teeth have been cleaned we will apply a special solution over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This solution will roughen the surface so that the plastic sealant will stick to each tooth. The solution is then rinsed off and the tooth is dried.

Then our dentist will paint the sealant over the chewing surfaces and allow the sealant time to dry. Sealants are either clear or slightly tooth-colored so they blend in with your child’s smile. No one will be able to see your child’s sealants when they talk or smile.

How long do sealants last?

With proper care, sealants can last a few years. During your child’s six-month checkups we will continue to check the health of the sealant. Sealants that are broken or chipped can easily be reapplied.
