How your pediatric dentist can help your child’s smile.

Your child deserves to enjoy a healthy smile for life. You, as a parent, play a critical role in helping them enjoy a healthy smile. The first step is teaching them good oral hygiene habits. Your pediatric dentist can help.

Dr. Jaclyn Bae at Sunshine Pediatric Dentistry in Yorba Linda, CA, offers comprehensive pediatric dentistry services to help your child’s smile.

Young children are especially prone to experiencing dental decay. That’s because many children eat a diet high in sugar. When sugar mixes with the bacteria in saliva, an acid is formed. This acid is strong enough to eat through tooth enamel and cause a cavity.

Your child must learn the benefits and techniques of a good oral hygiene program to help prevent dental problems like decay and gum disease.

When you teach your child good oral hygiene habits, you need to:

Demonstrate tooth brushing by brushing each tooth using a gentle circular motion. Brush each tooth surface and along the gumline, then have them demonstrate the technique back to you. Always have them use a toothpaste containing fluoride for added protection. Tooth brushing should be done after meals and before bed.

Demonstrate flossing using child-friendly flossing tools. Floss between each tooth, making sure the floss is firmly against each tooth surface as you move the floss up and down. Have your child demonstrate the technique back to you. Flossing should be done at least once each day.

Good oral hygiene habits would not be complete without visits to your pediatric dentist for a dental exam, including x-rays, a professional cleaning, and a fluoride treatment.

Remember to always demonstrate good oral hygiene habits too, because your child will adapt the good oral hygiene habits you are following.
