What are baby bottle caries?
Early Childhood Caries, formerly known as baby bottle caries can occur from a buildup of bacteria on the teeth and oral tissues. They can occur in infants and come from sweet liquids like juice, formula, or milk being allowed to remain on the teeth for extended periods of time. Early childhood caries are particularly prevalent in children who are given a bottle at naptime or bedtime since the liquid remains on the teeth and is not washed away by saliva or water. The upper front teeth are most commonly affected by this problem, though caries can occur in any tooth.
How can I prevent early childhood caries?
Be sure to avoid giving your child a bottle of anything other than water at naps or bedtime. Never dip a child’s pacifier in sugar or syrup. Avoid soft drinks of any kind and try to limit the amount of sugar consumed by your child throughout the day. Do not put sugary drinks like juice in bottles and try to only offer sugary drinks in sippy cups. Before your child’s first tooth erupts, wipe their gums down with a soft, damp cloth at least once a day. As soon as the first tooth erupts through the gums, begin brushing at least once a day with a baby toothbrush.
Dental Care for Infants in Yorba Linda, CA
By keeping up with a strong at-home routine for your child, you instill good habits which can benefit them for the rest of their life. In addition to an at-home care routine, your child should begin seeing their dentist within six months of their first tooth erupting or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. This will further instill good oral care habits and ease dental anxiety your child may have about visiting the dentist.
